Learning material in English 🇬🇧

We are striving to give everyone, whether you speak Norwegian or not, the opportunity to learn about Norway’s legal landscape surrounding serving and selling alcohol.

The legal landscape can be complex, and unfortunately the official tests required to get licensed are still only available in Norwegian.

In order to make this a bit easier to overcome, we are increasing our efforts to make more learning material available in English and other languages.

Glossary of Terms: Norwegian to English

“Glossary of Terms” is designed to assist non-Norwegian speakers in understanding key terminology related to obtaining a license and passing the corresponding tests to serve or sell alcohol in Norway. The glossary translates and explains various Norwegian terms into English, focusing on business, legal, and regulatory concepts that are crucial for navigating the license testing process in the Norwegian context.

Key sections of the glossary include translations and definitions of terms related, but not limited to:

  • Licenses and Permits: Such as “Serveringsbevilling” (Serving license/permit) and “Skjenkebevilling” (Liquor license).
  • Business Operations: Including terms like “Forretningsplan” (Business plan) and “Kontantoppgjør” (Cash settlement).
  • Taxation: Definitions of terms such as “Merverdiavgift” (Value-added tax, VAT) and “Forskuddsskatt” (Advance tax).
  • Employment and Legal Requirements: Including “Arbeidsavtale” (Employment contract) and “Arbeidsmiljøloven” (Working Environment Act/Law).

The glossary aims to provide clear explanations of these terms to help users effectively navigate the Norwegian regulatory testing framework, in the context of alcohol licensing and establishment of a restaurant, fast food or other serving food or selling alcohol. The document also emphasizes expressions needed to understand the importance of compliance with local laws and regulations, and contains over 70 expressions, across 18 pages – in no particular order of topic or importance.

This document is intended for personal and educational use, and unauthorized distribution is prohibited.

We are considering developing tests for non-Norwegian speakers, even though the official tests are not available in English. We believe it could prove valuable in studying for the licensing tests in languages other than Norwegian.
